Response to “White Lives Matter” banner found in Union City

Hello Everyone,

If you have been watching the news this weekend, you probably saw that there was a “White Lives Matter” banner posted in Union City. As we approach the holiday commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this is a sad reminder that we have a long way to go to address systemic racism and equity. The posting of that banner is contrary to the work we are committed to in the New Haven Unified School District and we condemn this type of blatantly racist action. Just days ago, I highlighted in my Friday update, the work we are proud to undertake related to anti-racist training and to ensureing that equity work is deeply embedded in what we do in our district. This incident also confirms for me that our equity-based work is more important now than ever. Our students deserve nothing less.

While this incident is disheartening, frustrating, and personally makes me angry, it also reminds me that Dr. King rose above the hate that is fostered by these types of incidents. As we reflect on his life this weekend, it is worth remembering his famous words:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

I hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend.
